This little plate of hard steel (front) is one of the oldest tools known to woodworkers. It's called a cabinet scraper. The file and burnisher in the background are used to put an edge on the scraper. Putting the right edge on the scraper...ah, that's the challenge. There's only so much you can tell a person about how to do this; you just have to try it yourself, then practice, practice.

A scraper with a properly squared and turned edge can easily remove prodigious quantities of wood...just like peeling sunburn. (I hate to admit it, but I bet Antonio Torres was better at this than I'll ever be.) Which tool is more useful to me as a guitar maker, my scraper or my laptop computer? Boy, that's a toughie.
